Pay As You Go cell phone SIM cards available in the USA?

When I travel to the USA (I am British) are there cheap mobile (cell) phone SIM cards that I could use in order to keep in touch with folks using US cell phones? I wouldn’t be looking to sign up for a cell phone contract, just to use a “Pay-As-You-Go” type SIM in my existing phone.

I appreciate your help, particularly Americans!
Telling me where/with whom I could get a SIM card in the USA would be most helpful. Otherwise, what’s the point in answering?

Are there any card-phone options in the USA?

I live in Greece but I need to go to the USA for a short period of time. In Europe we can go in a 7-11 store and buy a cell phone-number without any contract or bills but by using pre-paid cards which are sold everywhere. Do you have this option in the US? Because I don’t want to make a contract with a service provider…

Is there any way AT ALL to make a cell phone that isn’t compatible in the USA to be compatible in the USA?

There are many cell phones out there that only operate on foriegn counties networks. One phone that I REALLY want says it will work with all sim cards in the UK/Europe and Australia. Is there any way at all, even maybe some engineering/wiriring work, to make the phone compatible with a USA sim card? Any phone techs out there?
