I bought a prepaid phone in USA , now i am going back to india can i use phone in india with indian sim card?

outside the US cell phone, sim cards?

my daughter will be doing an over seas semester called semester at sea. Basically she will be in 11 counties in 4 months, including China and India.

I would like her to have a cell phone – without paying $5.00 a min.

I heard you can change out the sim cards.

How does this work?
Where can you buy a sim card for that country?

I don’t want to use my local phone provider IDD service anymore because of the expensive rates, usually I can only stay on the phone for 5 mins and can’t help thinking of the charges I will receive. I was thinking of getting a “phone card” where I can monitor my calls and expenses and at the same time hoping for cheaper rates. i currently use a phone card and a house phone to make calls to india… i know if i use my cell phone during off peak hours and on weekends… theres no extra charge and i dont lose my peak hour minutes… but i was wondering if i use a cell phone and during peak hours… do i waste my peak hour minutes as well as my phone card minutes?
